COVID-19 and Migrant Workers: On Misinformation and Financial Stress

This year we hosted a webinar on two of our COVID-19 specific projects focusing on one of the worst-hit groups during the COVID-19 national lockdown in India: migrant workers.

Building on our ongoing remittances study, we, in collaboration with IDinsight, investigated if the remittance behaviors of female migrant workers at Shahi Exports, India’s largest exporter of garments, changed as a result of the lockdown.

The second study we focused on was our Misinformation study which aimed to identify the most effective mediums to spread the right information about COVID-19 and reduce anxiety faced by migrant workers.

Since our samples have low literacy, asymmetric or false information about a pandemic and resultant financial and mental stress become significant. Through this webinar, we delved into these aspects of COVID-19 with a focus on the impacts on migrant workers. The discussion also brought up challenges related to operating evaluations in the pandemic.

Speakers:

  • Karan Nagpal, IDinsight, presented the research design and evaluation of a study on increasing the use of digital payment applications among the female migrant population.
  • Smit Gade, Good Business Lab, presented key findings from the study on increasing the use of digital payment applications among female migrant workers and also talked about the scale-up of the (Mis)Information and Anxiety study.
  • Saswati Mishra, Good Business Lab, presented the design and evaluation of the RCT on Misinformation and Anxiety around COVID-19 amongst the migrant population.
